The English Defense starts with 1. d4(c4) b6 (or 1…e6 and 2…b6). It seems like a Queen’s Indian Defense, but here Black isn’t developing the Ng8, which changes the situation. On one hand, Black is able to control the e4-square with the f-pawn if White reacts passively. On the other hand, White can try to refute this defense with a quick e2-e4.
